Do you ever read articles that seem to flow smoothly from sentence to sentence?

Do you then wonder why your own writing feels choppy — like you’re jumping from one idea to the next?

How can you write so your ideas move more smoothly?

Signal words help you transition between ideas so that your writing sounds more fluent. Signal words also help your readers follow your thoughts more easily.

Imagine your readers are driving a car behind you. As a considerate writer, you ought to “signal” to your readers to indicate where you’re going next. These “transition” words help your readers follow you as you move across ideas (the prefix trans = across).

A free reference list

Below, you’ll find a list I always share with my Writing Coaching clients.

Unlike many alphabetized lists, I organized these transition words by how you would use them in your writing to convey different meanings.

If you’d prefer a pdf, just send me an email!

Practice adding these words to your writing to increase your written fluency!
